Hey Sis, the gym you choose matters! You should approach this decision the same way to enter into other important decisions related to your health and well-being. The wrong gym can cost you money as it leaves you unfulfilled and unmotivated to attend. There are several factors you should consider when choosing a gym, making the right decision means less excuses and increased accountability. Here, I’ve provided some of the considerations that are important to me.
1. Location is Key:
– You want to make sure the gym you choose is convenient to your home or place of work. I like to visit the gym right after dropping the kids off in the morning and a short drive to the gym afterwards ensures I stay on my exercise grind. If you find yourself having a mid-day break and the gym is nearby, you also increase your odds of actually showing up – which is the hardest part of starting and sticking to an exercise routine. Long drives to they gym just aren’t it and only makes it easier to find an excuse for not going!
2. Facilities and Equipment Matter:
– The quality of the facility matters! If you like a luxurious gym experience, you might be looking for a pool, towel service, jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. If you’re a parent, kids clubs are very important! Imagine all the excuses you can come up with if you have no place to drop your child off while at the gym or you like the idea of working out as a family. Another important factor to consider when evaluating a gym is whether the equipment you need is offered and in the quantity needed so you’re not waiting around for one or two machines (this isn’t typically an issue with cardio machines).
3. Cleanliness and Maintenance:
– We want clean facilities when we work out. Dirty gym facilities gross me out and guess what – I won’t return. If the gym has towel service, are they white or dingy (it matters)! You can and should look for clean facilities within your price point (these gyms do exist)! One additional watch-out is broken equipment. Make sure the gym you choose is not only clean, but has working equipment.
4. Personal Trainers:
– Sometimes we need specialized training and attention – and that’s okay. It’s really nice to know that trainers are available if and when you need them. Trainers do come at an additional cost (high cost), so find out the rates and include it in your budget as needed.
5. Membership Options and Fees:
– When selecting a gym, read all the fine print! Ensure you understand the fees and when they will be debited. Pay attention to a la carte expenses, and the requirements for cancellation (including any additional costs). Some gyms allow you to pause your membership, so explore these options as well and if there is an associated fee.
6. Class Schedule and Programs:
– I like a variety of fitness classes, and not just Zumba! My current gym offers several cardio fitness classes, along with strength training, yoga and pilates. The facility I attend has rock-climbing, pickle ball and basketball. While I love these options, it’s not needed or necessary for everyone. Pock what works your needs as the perks don’t matter if you don’t use them.
7. Trial Period and Amenities:
– Before committing, always check to see if a free trial is offered. This gives you a chance to see if this environment works for you. Some gyms offer a one day pass and others may provide a one week pass. During this trial, try out the equipment and fitness classes (if that is your thing). Parents – If there is a kids club, see if you can drop your child off because their experience is just as important.
